2023 & 2024 Prime Health Innovation Challenges in California and Colorado

CA: August 2023 - July 2024

CO: April - October 2024

Powered by support from the California Health Care Foundation and the Colorado Health Foundation, Prime Health’s Innovation Challenge is an annual program that advances healthcare through innovation, aiming to improve health equity, access, quality, and cost for underserved communities in California and Colorado.

What is the Prime Health Innovation Challenge?

A collaborative, community-driven process to:

  • amplify and accelerate diverse and impact-driven founders

  • vet, validate, and pilot the best technology and solutions

  • advance healthcare in Colorado and California through innovation, collaboration, and community building

Provider, payer, policy, business, and technology experts provide feedback and mentorship to digital health companies seeking to pilot their solutions with healthcare organizations. The 3-round, multi-month program concludes with a live pitch competition featuring the top digital health solutions vying for the chance to win a portion of the prize funding and the chance to pilot their solution with a safety net healthcare partner.

This annual program began in 2014 in Colorado to galvanize the digital health ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of digital health technologies focused on achieving the Quadruple Aim: improved patient experience, improved provider experience, improved population health, and lower costs.

Key Achievements

Thousands of patients have participated in testing new technology-powered models of care through pilot programs.

To date, Innovation Challenges have convened hundreds of healthcare and technology leaders and experts to serve as Judges and Mentors.

Throughout the years, the Innovation Challenge has supported the development and implementation of more than 45 pilots across Colorado and California. Many of these pilots have transformed into sustainable partnerships.

Facilitated collaboration that led to the invention of numerous new models and solutions, including new ways to address healthcare for the homeless, suicide prevention, maternal health, and more.

Since 2018, 100% of all pilot programs have supported healthcare innovation for communities that have historically had less power or privilege, been underserved, marginalized, or are Medicaid, CHP+, and uninsured beneficiaries,

Last year, Prime Health expanded the Challenge into California’s healthcare ecosystem! Now in its 2nd cycle in California in partnership with CHCF, the 2023 Innovation Challenge is designed to align with and support the California Health Care Foundation’s priorities:

Who is the California Health Care Foundation?

The Challenge in California is funded by our partner, CHCF Innovation Fund, part of the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF), an independent, nonprofit philanthropy. CHCF works to improve the health care system so that all Californians have the care they need. They focus especially on making sure the system works for Californians with low incomes and for communities who have traditionally faced the greatest barriers to care.

They partner with leaders across the health care safety net to ensure they have the data and resources to make care more just and to drive improvement in a complex system. CHCF defines their four annual priorities in Our Approach. These priorities are determined based on their Goals & Strategy, which has been influenced by learning and assessing CHCF’s impact.

CHCF is dedicated to advancing meaningful, measurable improvements in the way the health care delivery system provides care to the people of California, particularly those with low incomes and those whose needs are not well served by the status quo.

They work to ensure that people have access to the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford.

Who is the Colorado Health Foundation?

The Challenge in Colorado is funded by our partner, the Colorado Health Foundation. CHF is a statewide philanthropic organization that champions the overall health and well-being of every Coloradan by advocating for and investing in solutions and policies that drive health equity and racial justice.

They engage closely with communities across the state through investing, policy advocacy, learning and capacity building. CHF has four strategic focus areas, which are used to guide and create their 10 priorities. Both of these can be found in their Priorities. Additionally, they are committed to holding themselves accountable, and annually collects and publicly shares data that demonstrates their progress in centering race and ethnicity in their work.

CHF is dedicated to their ultimate goal of improving the health of Coloradans, and does everything with the intent of creating health equity
